Taste the Rules
I have been working on "Feyalis" for a few years now and am getting very close to finally releasing the rules. I have been working with James Holloway who has been an amazing editor. His knowledge of gaming combined with his years of gaming have helped me tremendously in understanding what needed to be changed in the rules. While we are still working on the rules I feel it is time to grant a small taste of what I have been working on for so long.
I have included 2 very small sections that should have enough verbiage in them to get the gears turning in all your heads. There are a ton of mechanics at work in the rules, but I have managed to simplify them down quite a bit. I look forward to hearing some questions and feedback regarding what you glean from these images.
The games units are separated into 3 different primary unit types. Grunts, Leaders, and Abominations. They are all good at performing some task in the game and have rules designed to ensure they stay balanced. Grunts are great at slaying Leaders, Leaders are great at slaying Abominations, and Abominations are great at stomping little grunts. This along with many other choices, force a game where "Deathstar" units are discouraged and largely ineffective. Sound decision making and smart list design win games in Feyalis.
Because a battle doesn't happen all in sequence, many events will take place at similar times. By mixing up the order in which events take place we create a battlefield where event timing averages out better. Most actions will take place in the Action Phase and have the impactful effects take place in the Final Phase. Players who opt to take the first action in the action phase automatically forfeit the opportunity to act first in the final phase. This creates a tactical decision that makes a player think about what is most important; Inflicting damage and moving first, or resolving powers and morale effects first. The tide of the game can influence these both dramatically. Finally there is a game where going first isn't always better!
Rules were written by Joshua Edwards and edited with help from James Holloway. These rules are alpha rules and are still under review.
